A Second Attempt: A Multimedia Lesson Plan

A second attempt shouldn’t be difficult, I said to myself. I was wrong. My first lesson plan was already tough, but when I found out that we are to incorporate multimedia in our lesson plan, is said “ah oh, what should I teach what multimedia tools should I use?” It took me awhile but I decided I wanted to create a lesson plan on Photoshop. What made me choose this topic? Well, my content area is in Art and I thought it would be interesting to teach high school students this tool. When I was in high school, technology was not really incorporated in my art classes. Therefore, using this software and other media will be interesting to students because, one, with so many social networks online; we like to add pictures of ourselves and interest. Maybe a student wants to edit a picture and post their work or simply to make it look nice.
Second, it can be a stepping stone for students to gain interest in the subject area; this student may pursue a degree in Graphic artist.
Planning this lesson, I learned that multimedia tools are essential in creating a lesson plan because it gains students’ interest and promote understanding. For me, this is important because if you do not gain their interest, learning would not take place (Clark and Starr 1996). In addition, I learned that by using multimedia, you reach out to different learners, visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. Therefore, integrating media in your lesson will benefit a lot of students through different ways.
In my lesson plan, I decided to use several media, Photoshop software, video clips, internet, and power point. I thought that by incorporating all these media, it will gain interest and new skills. At first, at one point, I wanted students to make a video lapse of their drawing. Then, I realized that it is too much work for high school students and too advance. So, I decided to have the students save their work instead and upload the drawing in their webpage. Creating a webpage is one of the tools I learned in ED 451 and decided to incorporate that in my lesson plan.
Similar to my first reaction paper, the least I liked in creating this lesson plan is deciding what to teach and what tools to use. There were so many tools I can chose from and I really had to think about it to make the lesson plan work. However, I really enjoyed posting my lesson plan online using free website creator. There was a time a got addicted to it and now I have two webpage, one for my second lesson plan and one for personal use. I took the pleasure in adding videos, pictures, and customizing my page.
The best NETS*T for my lesson plan is number 2 in the 2008 NETS for teachers, Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments (NETS). “Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers (NETS).”
My lesson plan consists of multimedia that facilitates learning. It involves using contemporary tools such as the internet, software, and educational videos. All these will maximize the learning experience of the students and acquire new skills that will benefit them in the future. Therefore, I chose standard number 2.

Technology Tool Assessment #2

This is my assessment on the tools I learned in ED-451 (Audio & Visual Tech.) class. In the beginning of the semester, I did not know of these tools and now I'm equipped with lots of tricks. I can do so many things online now! So watch the video and see what I thought about the tools. Enjoy!

Assessment #1: Assistive Technology

Assessment #1: Assistive Technology

I thought that the video was very interesting. Technology is really on the rise specially for the students. It was remarkable how young students are using computers and other assistive technology tools for the disabled doing their homework and daily lessons. In addition, I thought the teachers were very helpful as well. They seemed very willing assisting the students. Assistive technology is really helpful for disabled students because it enables them to accomplish their dreams and help fulfill daily school task. In addition, it helps them prepare for college.
One of the moments in the video that stand out for me is the instruments. It’s amazing how an instrument can be changed or altered in order to accommodate the students with disability. I thought it was very inspiring watching the two people in the video playing instruments regardless of their disability. Playing a piano with one hand is very difficult but with the help of an assistive technology tool, the person was able to play the piano with metal fingers. Another person with a disability was able to play a horn with the help of a joystick. I thought that was really amazing and inspiring.
Although some of the technologies shown on the video are very helpful for students with disability, not all school has it, perhaps because of the cost. Therefore, those students are not given the opportunity to explore and use such technology. I think it is a good investment for school because they not only help disabled students do work in class, but it can also inspire them to accomplish something like the student in the video playing the horn. It’ll allow them to experience what a normal student would. Overall, the video was really interesting because I never knew of such tools. I am more aware now that these assistive technology tools actually exist.

Reflections on my first lesson plan

My First Lesson Plan

As I started writing my first lesson plan, I was very uncertain what the ASSURE components are. I was very frustrated at first because I was not sure if I was planning my lesson correctly. Since this is my first lesson plan, it was very difficult for me. I thought creating a lesson plan was easy for a teacher to do but now I know that it takes time and patience to make the ASSURE components jive together and that they should aligned one another.

With my problems on hand, first thing I needed to do was to do research. One of the tools that I learned in class was using different types of search engines. Therefore, I looked up the acronyms ASSURE model (Nelson) and sure enough the explanation was in front of my screen. Although there were a lot of websites containing the same information, I had to evaluate the site to make sure that it is valid.

The very least I liked about this assignment is the fact that it’s my first. As the saying goes “There’s always a first time for everything”, absolutely reflected me while I was trying to finish up my lesson plan assignment. I had difficulties in developing my objectives that it took most of my time online doing the practice exercises trying to make sure that my ABC and Ds are aligned (Nelson). The best I liked about this assignment was learning how to create a lesson plan using the ASSURE model. The ASSURE model is one of the best ways to create a lesson plan because it’s very simple format. In addition, I thought the topic of the lesson plan was great. Incorporating technology with content area is a wonderful combination of learning innovatively and at the same time it enhances students’ skills in areas such as creativity and knowledge (NETS).

I think the best NETS*T for this assignment is number 1, facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity (NETS). Students are always interest in learning new technology and skills and teachers are their best tool to teach these. Teaching students a subject can be fun, teachers should not be scared to incorporate technology in class because students will be inspired. Therefore, I think number 1 is the best standard for the lesson plan assignment.
